Big Sur Remote Backup is a safe,
automated backup and restoration system providing powerful
tools to protect important data. Unlike traditional data
protection tools, Big Sur Remote
Backup is simple to

initial setup.
There is no media to install,
remove, protect, or replace. Big Sur Remote Backup is highly
secure and only you the user has access to your own stored
data.
Your valuable data is encrypted and stored at a Secure
Data Center. Without your password, no one else can read
or use your confidential information. Not even Big
Sur Technologies' Staff; its that secure!
Our easy-to-use system is flexible in how often to backup
and how many previous versions of the data are kept. Because
only the Data Changes (Deltas) are stored, very small amounts
of storage are used to maintain versions. Big Sur
Remote Backup can even help when data is destroyed by mistake because
Big Sur Remote Backup maintains copies of deleted files for
a period of time preventing accidental deletions.
This valuable tool will come in very handy one day, guaranteed!

How Long Do Backup Tapes Last?
The period of time that a backup tape will last depends
entirely on whether you're talking about how long a tape
will hold data or how long until it wears out from constant
re-use. Generally, good-quality backup tapes will last for
at least 10 years if they are kept under "reasonable
conditions". Reasonable conditions means constant room
temperature, humidity, and the like. If you're comfortable,
your tapes are comfortable. Heat and dust are the greatest
enemies of tapes in storage, so keep them in their dust-proof
containers, as well as keeping them at room temperature.
Tapes
that are being used to back up data will eventually wear
out after a number of passes through the tape drive. How
soon this happens depends partially on conditions, but mostly
on how often the tape is used. Do you have any video tapes
that you've watched so often that the tape wears out? It's
the same principle.
Assuming the tapes are operated at reasonable
temperature and humidity, and they are protected from dust
and dirt, the "tape life" will depend on how many passes
the tape makes through the drive. This is usually a function
of how many times the tape is used at normal speed, but if
the tape 'shoeshines' (runs back and forth as it records
the data) because the system can't feed data to the tape
fast enough, the life expectancy of the tape will be greatly
reduced.

"Recently there was a fire
in the building of one of our customers where we implemented
a disk backup, and the Big Sur Remote Backup solution.
As a result of the fire, the suite and their computer
room was totally destroyed. Because of the newly installed
disk backup and the protection of the off-site replication,
we were able to be up an running in less than 1 hour.”
Charles Love, Technical Services Manager for Big
Sur Technologies, talking about how this solution
helped another customer recover from a disaster.
Fast! |
Since you don't want to take a chance on losing the
data on the tape, a good rule of thumb is to replace your
backup tapes at least once a year. This is almost always
well before the tape shows signs of serious wear, so you
can use tapes that are reaching the end of their useful life
to archive data that will not be accessed frequently. Once
a tape shows sign of wear, any data on that tape becomes
venerable.
Lets also think about disaster recovery. Customers
will often take their tapes offsite every night. If some
type of incident were to occur and you were denied access
to the tape drive, how would you restore the data? It should
also be noted that tape drives that are more then a year
old are generally hard to find from suppliers. The question
we ask the most is how old are your tapes and drive, and
do you have a spare drive? If you lost your server, could
your business stand to be without data for weeks while a
replacement drive is located?
How Can Big Sur Help With Our Backups?
We offer several solutions to our customers, that our NetCare
engineers will be happy to tailor to your specific needs.
Most commonly in the small to medium business area we leverage
two additional types of Backup methods. “Backup to Disk”
and “Offsite Backup” - When we use backup to disk, we are
not bound by the limits of any tape drive. When we use offsite
remote backup, we know our data is safe, but we are limited
to an Internet connection. If there is a disaster, will you
have Internet? All of these options can be discussed with
your Business Development Manager and Assigned SE.
